The South Beach Street Historic District was established in 1988 to protect a section of Daytona Beach that includes the first settlement incorporated in 1876.
Daytona was named after Matthias Day, a newspaper publisher from Ohio who bought the land in 1870, only to lose it in 1872 when he encountered financial problems.
Out of respect for Matthais, residents decided to name the new settlement Daytona when it was incorporated in 1876.

Passenger safety and onboard training were frequently referenced due to the sinking of the Costa Concordia in January. While some people may have been influenced by the incident, experienced cruisers and travel savvy individuals realize the problem wasn’t with the ship, but rather the human component, which can and will be addressed.
The future remains bright. When I worked for a small cruiseline in the early 80s, cruising, as we know it today, was new. Initial estimates suggested less than 2% of the traveling public had ever been on a cruise ship. That was do to the fact that all of the itineraries were one week or more in duration. As well as the fact that there were very few cruise ships.
That changed with the emergence of Carnival Cruise Lines and its innovative 3 and 4 night cruise concept, which has evolved into 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 night cruises, as well as some of 10 nights. While the world cruise still exists, its the shorter cruises that feed the market.
The current order book contains 20 new ships with a value of over $13 billion. Seven ships will be delivered in 2012 with the remaining thirteen due by 2015. That’s why more than 1000 exhibitors are in the Miami Beach Convention Center looking for a piece of the pie which is estimated to expand by 4% this year.
CLIA (Cruise Line International Association) projects 17 million passenters in 2012. By way of comparison, in 1982, Bob Dickenson, then VP of Marketing for a one ship company called Carnival, told travel agents that statistics indicate the less than 1 million people have ever taken a cruise. He embarked on the path of comparsion to land based vacations and before he retired, Carnival was the largest cruise line in the world.
The annual Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show, produced by the Tidewater Builders Association, will take place in the Virginia Beach Convention Center from 9 to 11 March 2012.
Ed Clowes of Dynamic Infrared Inspections will be there, along with Tidewater Insulation, explaining how infrared themal imaging can help a home owner find air and water leaks around windows and doors, as well as identify areas in walls and ceilings that are missing insulation.
Infrared themal imaging is a non-destructive technique used in new and existing homes and commercial building for energy, electrical and moisture.
Dynamic Infrared Inspections has an equine application that helps horse owners and trainers locate potential, and existing, nerve and muscle damage. Equine thermography also works for saddle-fitting and hoof-balancing.
